The Sonic fanbase is pretty much most comparable to the Red Sox fanbase. No matter how many times the team disappointed, the fans kept coming back for more thinking this time will be better. Of course the Sonic fanbase is just like every other entertainment non-sport franchise there is and is pretty much a bunch of baaaawers who think Sega and Sonic Team is actually in it for the praise of owning such a franchise. Considering one of the "Greatest Hits" on the PS2 was Shadow the Hedgehog, I think that should just speak for itself.

In contrast to Red Sox fans though, Sonic fans constantly badmouth and push unreal expectations that are impossible to program into one game (Without it becoming another Psychonauts or hodge-podge of games that's trying to be everything) or swear off Sonic forever only to come back once a trailer catches their attention. Red Sox fans didn't cry and expect the team to do different things, just to do better and to win it all this time around.

Continuing my comparison and contrast to the Red Sox, Sonic Chronicles from what I hear of reviews actually seems to be one of the games where they do well enough to catch attention and probably even do very very well in the world series. Perhaps not win it - we're talking about Bioware developing the game, not a God defying the laws of physics more than the average JRPG.

The sonic RPG or Ar-Pee-Gee as Zero Punctuation sheep call it is a change of direction, but at heart I can tell that it's an RPG meant for children or for people who've never really sat down and played an RPG before, J or W, they perhaps contain elements of both even though the average W RPG gives you the option to kill each and everything and since Bioware didn't wanna give TOO much fanservice that part of W-RPGs had to be omitted. instead they rather decided to make it play like a J-RPG while giving you some elements of side-quests, stat allocation (Think Mario and luigi or KOTOR), learning skills from a pre-determined list, and choosing the responses Sonic or Tails say. Of course I decided to actually have Sonic be nice to Amy Rose since even the enemies in this game hate on her by repeatedly targeting her and Knuckles. (Amy Rose doesn't deserve her hate.)

One thing they also seem to be doing is taking a few elements from Legend of dragoon, which was famous and infamous for making the player develop muscle memory to get the combos right. Here that's only for POW moves. Like Legend of dragoon it usually expects perfection otherwise it either does nothing at all or does less damage but mostly does nothing at all. You can also do that to counter enemy attacks that seem a little easy enough but sometimes you can miss every one and they somehow manage to miss you.

Honestly this isn't too deep of an RPG, especially for a 10-15 year veteran such as I am, but I really think this makes a nice starter RPG that doesn't expect you to learn everything at the start like The World Ends With You without dumbing everything down too much like Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Bioware even decided to make it so that you HAVE to use POW moves to progress later in the game, because once you meet the Krons, you're gonna be doing only one damage with all your attacks unless you bring Omega, Shadow, or Blaze and get their armour-ignoring attacks to deal some damage. And of course, damn you Bioware for making Cream a seemingly necessary character by making her the healer and buffer....but thank you bioware for making Amy Rose a useful character! I've frequently seen her out damage Knuckles with her hammer.

What else is there to say, really? The battles are kind of like Chrono Cross when characters can attack more than once (...except for Cream, omega, and Big), Legend of Dragoon with the mentioned button-pushing, and generic RPG battle system of thinking ahead and prioritizing targets. Chao are maximized if you have a friend (which of course should have been Wi-Fi compatible or at least friend-code compatible) but just getting the regular chao alone is usually good enough. Ferox is easily the best chao in the game, it should go directly to Cream, and your points should be spent towards Revive, REfresh, and Heal. Sure it'd be awesome if she ever got more than just one turn to attack but if you can restore PP it's good enough for me.

Of course this isnt' for everyone. If you're not into sonic or allowed yourself to be spoiled by better games like Tales of the abyss, Seiken Denesetsu 3, or Shadow Hearts then you'd probably be a little underwhelmed with this game but I'm not really expecting this to be Super Mario RPG or anything. I honestly say this is an above average game, and I give it a 6.7 on a scale of one-to-ten...and here, FIVE is average.
Not that much really.
